Sergeant
Grimshaw (William Hartnell) is about to retire & as the retirement days
loom closer, Sergeant Grimshaw wishes to that his last troop wins the Best
Troop Award. He is so obsessed with this dream that he has a bet of £50 with Sergeant
O’Brien. But Sergeant Grimshaw is dismayed when he meets his recruits, a group
of misfits.
Charlie
Sage (Bob Monkhouse) is a reluctant recruit as he receives his call-up papers during
his wedding breakfast. Other recruits also show similar signs – Horace Strong
(Kenneth Connor) is a Hypochondriac & is convinced that he is suffering from
every disease that exists in medical science; a haughty university graduate, James
Bailey (Kenneth Williams) begrudges the very presence of the Army; delicate
& flowery Peter Golightly (Charles Hawtrey) is the clumsiest recruit that
one could find in any army; a failure Herbert Brown (Norman Rossington); an
upper-class cad Miles Heywood (Terence Longdon) who is present in the Army only
because his father, a top-ranking General, wanted him to; & a rock ‘n’ roll
Andy Galloway (Gerald Campion).
The
troop fails most of the tests during training sessions. Sergeant Grimshaw is
disheartened & talks to Corporal Copping (Bill Owen) that he would retire with
somewhat less than a bang, considering his troop was not performing well. One
of the recruits overhears the conversation. The troop decides to win the Best
Troop Award & make the Sergeant proud. On the day of the final tests, the troop
gives an outstanding performance & Sergeant Grimshaw wins the award.
