Captain Crowther addressing his crew
This laughter terror is about how a Captain tries to adjust himself with the last moment changes on his ship – Happy Wanderer.
Dr. Binn & First Officer Marjoribanks

Captain Crowther (Sid James) learns that there are five new crew members (officers) on the top five positions, just before the voyage begins. He finds out that the new crew is highly incompetent. To add on to his problems, the passengers are also a bunch of strange-behaving people. Captain Crowther hopes that his next voyage would be a captain on the transatlantic ship & that he would take some of his crew members along with him.

The Happy Wanderer begins its voyage from England & passes through various ports – Spain, Italy & North Africa. Among the passengers on board are two single ladies –
Flo & Gladys

Gladys (Liz Fraser) & Flo (Dilys Laye). They are traveling with a hope that Flo might find a husband on the ship. So she tries to find her partner in the PT instructor – Jenkins (Vincent Ball) as well as Captain Crowther. However, Dr. Binn (Kenneth Connor) – one of the new crew officers, falls for her; she neglects him. There is a

passenger (Ronnie Stevens) whose only interest on the ship is the bar. Bridget (Esma Cannon) is at her best. The other new recruit is the head chef – Wilfred Haynes (Lance Percival) finds out that he is sea-sick & takes his treatment from Dr. Binn.
First Officer Marjoribanks (Kenneth Williams), who is also a new crew member, is over-confident as always. He helps Gladys in being cupid to Dr. Binn & Flo. The new crew makes the captain happy with the dedication in their work. The five of them decide to hold a party for Captain Crowther along with the passengers.

Haynes bakes him a cake; while the new bar-tender cables the former one & offers the Captain his favorite drink – Aberdeen Angus.
The party is on in full swing when Captain Crowther gets a telegram mentioning an offer that he would be sailing as a captain in the new transatlantic ship. He turns down the offer & wishes to be with his own crew.
